Join the wide array of North Beach businesses from City Lights Booksellers to Original Joe’s Restaurant, organizations from the North Beach Business Association to the Chinese Chamber of Commerce, residents and property owners that are seeking historic recognition for one of America’s greatest historic neighborhoods. North Beach deserves to join New Orleans’ French Quarter and New York City’s Little Italy neighborhoods and other national register districts with this esteemed status.
North Beach is an iconic neighborhood that has long been home to one of the largest and most important populations of Italian and Chinese immigrants in the United States, and this proposal offers an opportunity to celebrate and preserve this vibrant history. Beyond the incredible historic buildings, the enduring cultural influence that encompasses the early LGBT community and the Beat generation continues to define North Beach. The proposed listing of North Beach would honor all of San Francisco and serve to honor the generations of Italians, Chinese, LGBT people, artists and poets who shaped the area and continue to contribute to its unique cultural landscape.
Reject the misinformation being spread by developer-funded opponents. As we’ve seen in our national recognized historic districts here in San Francisco, being listed on the National Register does not stop the development of new housing, does not create onerous permitting requirements, or increase property owner costs. Being on the National Register gives property owners access to federal tax credits and other financial incentives.
If North Beach isn’t a historic district, what is?
