COMMUNITY INVESTMENTS AND IMPACTS: NORTH BEACH

In most parts of the city, golden arches signify McDonald’s. In North Beach, thanks in part to our formula retail ban, we often think of North Beach Restaurant, a community institution going back more than 55 years. It inhabits a building constructed in 1907 that has three vaulted arched ceilings. This design is so unusual and iconic to North Beach that when the neighboring building—currently housing Luke’s Local—was erected, the architect mimicked North Beach Restaurant’s arches in its design. While we all love the restaurant’s beautiful architecture, what is more important than the outside of the building is what is inside.

North Beach Restaurant has long been a favorite of locals, politicians, celebrities, and the Who’s Who of the city. Telegraph Hill Dwellers recently held an impromptu board dinner there and were a table away from no other than our Congressional Representative Nancy Pelosi. It is not uncommon to see former mayors Willie Brown or Art Agnos enjoying a meal. However, in 2023, there was a question if that year would mark the end of an era. The restaurant was slated to close.

Thankfully, Francesco Covucci, a well-known North Beach restaurateur with a resume that includes Il Casaro, Barbara, and the California Fish Market, did not let this happen. He acquired the restaurant and reopened it at the end of 2024.

North Beach is not a neighborhood that happened by accident. It takes community leaders and community investment to nourish its soul and keep its spirit strong. Francescohas demonstrated time and time again that he is one of these leaders. Beyond his business activity, he has given to multiple North Beach organizations and frequently opens his space for community events and meetings. This is what community development looks like. It is the point where physical space (land use) meets culture and people (community).

Take, for example, THD’s Films with Friends. This program was started after covid to encourage people to come together again in community to watch movies and patronize their local bars/restaurants/other neighborhood establishments. Films with Friends started as a partnership between Telegraph Hill Dwellers and Those Guys Renegade Cinema. This year, with generous support from Francesco and North Beach Restaurant, it was able to expand its venues and show movies that were a little more mainstream. Due to Francesco’s generosity, we were able to create a “kids’ night” at Piazza Pellegrini, showing movies like Alvin and the Chipmunks and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I’m hearing rumors that we might even have a screening of The Godfather in North Beach Restaurant’s wine cellar, so keep an eye out for an email about that.

You might be asking, how is the food since it re-opened? At our board dinner, the restaurant did not disappoint. We shared fritto misto and burrata appetizers. I do recommend the braised beef cheek and the pasta della casa. The tiramisu and bomboloni are great ways to finish any meal. But, of course, the one thing that is better than eating good food is dining with friends in such a welcoming community space.
