On Friday evening, a devastating fire broke out on the 1000 block of Montgomery Street on Telegraph Hill. The blaze engulfed the top floor of the building and damaged the homes of several longtime neighbors before firefighters were able to bring it under control.
Among those displaced are Ruth and Ari, beloved longtime residents who have called this neighborhood home for more than 38 years. Both Ruth and Ari dedicated their careers to educating generations of San Francisco students. They’ve spent their lives giving back to others, shaping young minds, volunteering locally, and being the kind of neighbors who always show up for those in need.
Now, after decades of service and community, they need our help. Their rent-controlled apartment sustained severe smoke and water damage, leaving them without a livable home and facing the daunting challenge of rebuilding their lives from scratch.
This fundraiser aims to help them with essential needs: temporary housing support, clothing, food, and replacing personal belongings, as well as to support them as they navigate the search for new housing in one of the most expensive markets in the country.
What makes North Beach so special is our community. We know our neighbors, and we look after our own. It’s time to take care of two of our own.
