As a 16-year-old who has lived on Telegraph Hill my entire life, I can’t help but adore this place. I feel a sense of comfort, of warmth and familiarity that I cannot feel anywhere else.

Let’s start with Coit Tower, a glistening white building nestled high in the hills. I often find myself there, staring out at the view and almost mesmerized by its unchanging beauty. I recently had a friend say to me, a hint of envy in her voice, “I can’t believe you live right below Coit Tower.” A simple statement, but it’s a reflection of the magnificence of my home.

As I make my way through the neighborhood, I pass through areas that, although normalized in my head, are objectively quite amazing. The top of Union Street presents a breathtaking view, especially at sunset. The tiny yet constantly bustling cafes that seem to be filled with the same people every day, smoking cigarettes and sipping coffee, creating a uniquely balanced breakfast. Those who come out of restaurants, or pay me compliments from behind checkout counters: “You have gotten so old,” or “How is your father doing? Tell him I said hello.” These comments serve as small yet reassuring reminders of care. I continue strolling along, darting into alleyways and out of picturesque staircases lined with hydrangeas and passing old friends. Looking into sports bars packed to the brim with tourists and flat screen TVs. Listening to the constant ringing of church bells and the distant caw of parrots nestled high in leafy trees.

94133 is so uniquely nostalgic, bright and lovely; the neighborhood itself is a beacon of light. For no matter how many people come and go, the neighborhood remains a warm embrace, a colorful picture, a beating heart.
